Our Instructors

C.J. Barrett – Master Instructor, Sixth-Degree Black Belt

Master Barrett began her training in Clearwater, Florida at the age of seven.  Having been through each developmental program, she can offer a unique perspective on teaching our Tiny Tigers and Karate for Kids Programs and knows the valuable impact the ATA can have on teenage life.  By the age of 11 she ranked among the top ten competitors in the World for her age group and has continued to rank there ever since.  Master Barrett earned the distinguished title of World Champion in 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2013.  She graduated from the University of South Florida with Honors and 2 degrees; a BS in Microbiology and a BA in Psychology. She worked for many years at the Texas Health Department as a Medical Technologist in the Neonatal Screening Lab.  Throughout college, in an effort to become a well-rounded martial artist, Master Barrett participated in many different martial art styles and conducted extensive research on each.  Her journey inevitably cycled back to the American Taekwondo Association for its consistency and innovation.  After 15 years of managing and assisting with ATA schools in both Texas and Florida, Master Barrett brings an un-paralleled excitement with her every day, and thoroughly enjoys owning the Cedar Park and Austin locations.   With over 25 years of experience, she has had the privilege of being the recipient of many gifts offered through martial arts training and looks forward to sharing them with her students.

Nichole Mascari – Director of Operations, Certified Instructor, 3rd Degree Black Belt

Our Director of Operations, Mrs. Mascari, brings 20 years of business management to the school.  During the day she works in the semiconductor industry for a major supplier.  At night, she oversees operations at both schools.  She began her martial arts journey several years ago in Jhoon Rhee Taekwondo. She enjoys competition and hold State and District titles in forms and sparring.  After an extended break from martial arts, she is excited to continue toward her goals with the ATA as a certified instructor.  She is certified in IMS ground fighting and is our Bully Prevention Specialist.

Tanis Adams – Certified Instructor, 4th Black Belt

Mrs. Adams began training shortly after her daughter, Maya.  In the years since, she has achieved the rank of 3rd degree black belt and Certified Instructor.  Her real passion lies in teaching self-defense to girls and women.  “It is empowering.  I encourage each student to find their potential in this sport that can give so much.”

Franziska Gilbert – Certified Instructor, 4th Black Belt

Mrs. Gilbert moved to Austin in 1998 from Switzerland after meeting her husband while travelling in Australia.  She has been training with her three daughters (Zoe 11, Kara 9, and Casey 8) for seven years and they are now all 3rd and 2nd degree black belts.  Recently, Mrs. Gilbert earned her rank of 3rd Degree Black Belt.  She is a Certified Instructor. She also holds a certification in combat weapon sparring and IMS Ground Fighting.  Mrs. Gilbert is a stay-at-home mom, plays competitive tennis and is working on establishing her sewing business.  “I am honored to be able to share my experience as a student and to pass along my knowledge as an instructor to the students of Barrett’s ATA.”

Maya Adams – Certified Instructor, 4th Black Belt

Miss Adams started training in Taekwondo at the age of five and has never stopped.  At age nine she got her first degree black belt and is currently a third degree black belt.  Taekwondo has instilled many life skills and done some amazing things for Miss Adams.  “Taekwondo made me the person I am today.” She focuses her training in Women’s Self-Defense, especially for high school and college students.  She has seen that in today’s society, young ladies have a lot to learn.

Evelyn Gray – Certified Instructor, Second-Degree Black Belt

Mrs. Gray began her Martial Arts training a little over three years ago with the original purpose of showing support for her four year old grandson who was a Tiny Tiger at the time. However, as she continued to train, her purpose changed and getting her black belt became her goal.  She became a Level 2 Specialty Certified Instructor.  And, along with her grandson, she received their first degree black belt in February 2014. When not training or instructing, Mrs. Gray spends her time traveling and serving as a Human Resource Manager for Cracker Barrel Old Country Store.

Rebekah Aldrich – Certified Instructor, Third-Degree Black Belt

After watching her husband train in various styles of martial arts over the last 15 years, Mrs. Aldrich began training at Barrett’s ATA with her husband in January 2012.  One of her passions is to help people develop whether it be in school, at work, or in ATA.  “Many teachers in school and outside school had awesome impacts in my life and I love paying that back with interest!”  She has two B.S. degrees from Virginia Tech, Math with Psychology minor and Physics with Biology minor, and currently works as a group manager at National Instruments.

Catherine Cheng – Certified Instructor, Second-Degree Black Belt

Mrs. Cheng began training in Taekwondo with Master Barrett in 2012. Mrs. Cheng loves the physical and mental challenge that Taekwondo provides, as well as the camaraderie with other students. She has worked with young children for over 25 years, so teaching Tots and Tigers is a natural fit. Mrs. Cheng and her husband have 3 children who have all studied Taekwondo under Master Barrett. Mrs. Cheng loves helping students gain confidence through Taekwondo.

Marty Kelly – Certified Trainer, Second-Degree Black Belt

Mr Kelly began martial arts training in 2014 for physical & mental benefits it brings in addition to the increased flexibility gained through training.  Most importantly, joining Master Barrett’s ATA allows him to fully participate in a sport with his son, now a 2nd Degree Black Belt. Both have enjoyed the time together in school as well as the tournament circuit around the country.  Mr. Kelly is also a big proponent of the Warrior Fight program & Krav Maga Self Defense and frequently organizes self defense seminars for fellow Real Estate Brokers / Agents to stress the importance of being aware of one’s surroundings & how to prevent or fight off violent attacks that occur with dozens of Realtors each year.  As an instructor, Mr. Kelly’s goal is to help empower our students with the tools to prevent our young students from being bullied while introducing them to the physical, mental & spiritual benefits of martial arts training.
